I told my student to 'help themselves' to food but when I arrived home my student had eaten all the treats.

It is a good idea to keep a container with 'snacks' written on it so the student knows exactly what they can take if they are starving. Some hosts teach their guests to prepare themselves light meals, such as Maggie soups or the 1-minute noodles (you need to inform them where these are kept). These can indeed be life-savers while dinner may be a couple of hours away.
